Scottsdale residents oppose mobile phone tower

Optus plans to build the tower opposite a community sports complex to improve mobile phone coverage in the area.Long time Scamander resident Ron Cooper lives about 150 metres from where Optus plans to build the tower.

He is angry it will be close to homes and community facilities.Mr Cooper says he is concerned about radiation and doesn't think the tower is good for tourism."I think it is gonna be a bit of an eyesore to them," he said.

The Break O'Day Mayor Robert Legge agrees."They can put it somewhere else but not fair bang at the entrance to a town," Mr Legge said.Andrew O'Connor from Digital Tasmania says it has many positives for the community."They are necessary to bring competition in services to these outlying communities," Mr O'Connor said.Mr O'Connor says the community should not be concerned, because radiation emitted from mobile phone towers is very low.The Council will vote on the development next month.
