Christmas Deals 2011 Panasonic Lumix DMC-S1 12_1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom with 2_7-Inch LCD (Black) Appliances

Flash is only good to about 2 meters
Delay between pictures is "acceptable" but not excellent
Camera audio speaker close to worthless
"Burst" feature (constant shooting while holding shutter button) is poor

First thing I do with something like this is take it out of the box and start playing with it without reading the manual - not something I recommend, but working with a product starting in total ignorance tells you something about the overall device that gets spoiled once you learn how it is supposed to work. After playing with it in ignorance, I then read the enclosed printed manual from cover to cover. NOTE: The included CD-ROM includes a much more extensive, forty-two pages, manual that goes into greater technical detail about this camera.

It was trivial to charge the included battery and it took a little less than the two hours advertised to do so. The Panasonic DMC-S1 is a very small, palm sized "point and shoot" that nestled easily in my front shirt pocket which was full of other junk as well. The actual camera is very light.

I popped in the charged battery and a 4 GB Class 4 SD card (easy to do without reading the manual since both can only fit in the correct manner), pressed the power on, and started shooting everything in sight using the default IA (intelligent auto) mode. You will have to get an SD card since the on-board memory is only good for about 4 pictures at the highest (4000 x 3000 pixels) setting.

The first twenty pictures I took were pretty solid with one or two slightly washed out with the automatic flash. The delay between pictures was acceptable (2-3 seconds) but not exceptional by any means. In IA mode, holding down the shutter button half way displays the ISO and shutter speed on the LCD display, which with my limited photographic experience was still a nice feature.

Part of what I attempt to do is intentionally "stupid" things to see what happens (no, I do not immerse it in water). So, I turned the house lights out and started shooting people across the room. I didn't expect these low light photos to come out well, and they didn't - the camera detected the low light and that it needed the flash, but the range of the flash didn't do much to illuminate beyond the specified 2 meters or so, hence, the picture was blurry. Otherwise, walking around the house, outside the house, up to people real close, etc., I'd say 90 percent of the 150 or so pictures I took were very good to excellent (and a little post processing won't hurt a thing). The anti-jitter features seemed to be in top form with almost no blurriness in any but in the worst lighting conditions.

I took this on my train ride to work and shot inside and outside, and got some very nice pictures with the raindrops on the window in sharp focus, and the background scenery quite clear. The IA mode is a pretty good universal choice. I did have some issues shooting some macro shots (a couple of inches away) and experimented with turning the flash totally off. Macro shots seem to work best with no flash. All in all, this is the best "point and shoot" I've ever had for shooting macro type close-ups (e.g., I like to take close-up pictures of butterflies). Off the train and at work I was able to get some very nice shots of tiny screws and wood grain on the desk.

My next tests were with the video. The HD is EXCELLENT but it is, as expected, a memory pig. The camera indicated I could shoot a little less than 10 minutes of HD video for the maximum 2 GB file size, or about two separate 10 minute HD videos on the 4 GB chip. The lowest quality setting (320x240) gives over an hour per each 2 GB file. Playback of the video (and all pictures) was more than acceptable, and the quality of both looked the same on my PC's larger monitor. The speaker on the camera is practically worthless (not a deal breaker) but it does exist and if you put your ear real close you can hear the mono sound of your video. On my PC, the sound was loud and clear, but unexceptional. This would not be my first choice as a video camera, but can still be useful for creating short YouTube shoutouts.

There are lots of settings possible (having read the manual) but I get a "point and shoot" (like this camera) to avoid complex settings. I'm pretty much going to stick with the IA as my default, and will likely turn the flash.

Samsung Just Called Out Every iPhone Owner, Including Me (Watch Video)

Posted in : CellPhones

(added few months ago!)

Samsung just launched their new advertising campaign called The Next Big Thing is Already Here. “The campaign highlights the concept that the Galaxy S II is considered by consumers as the smartphone of choice. The advertisement places current Galaxy S II owners outside long lines for another leading smartphone. When the Galaxy S II user compares the sleek design, large screen, 4G speeds and breadth of apps and content against the competitor’s phone, the consumers standing in line begin to show signs of regret and remorse over the smartphone they’re waiting for. The campaign concludes with the message that ‘the next big thing is already here’ in the competitive smartphone market.” That’s from Samsung oh and that competitor, yeah you know it’s the iPhone.

“I could never get a Samsung, I’m creative.” Preach the truth Samsung! “Dude, you’re a barista. Speaking of which, soy no whip mocha, please.” That’s it! We’re fighting now, Samsung. Enjoy this while it lasts, Samsung because once that Galaxy Nexus comes out people will be like Samsung, who? Try not to get brain freeze, Samsung! Also because I will be petty, I’m trying to see what everyone is talking about on your Facebook page but it looks like nothing, HA!

Google unveils new iPad search app

Posted in : PDAs

(added few months ago!)

Users of Apple Inc.’s iPad can now have an easier time searching the Internet with Google with its new upgraded app for the popular tablet computer.

Software engineer Daniel Fish said the search app is now more interactive and more visual, with an image carousel that allows users to swipe through images.

“Whether you’re doing research and comparing results, or exploring beautiful imagery, we have added new features to make the app more interactive, more visual and to help you find what you want more easily,” Fish said in a blog post.

He said the app starts to display results as soon as a user begins to type, such that one does not even need to press the search button.  Picking a web page to visit will have the page load on a new, slide-in pane that will layer over the search results, he said.

“You can slide the pane to the right to get back to your search results, and even keep scrolling through the results as your web page is loading. This allows you to go back and forth from results to web pages quickly to get the information you are looking for,” he said.  Search results can be viewed on the left and a web page on the right in the slide-in pane, he added.

On the other hand, a visual carousel allows one to swipe right to view snapshots of pages one has visited, stacked and organized by search term.  Past searches can be seen with a new, visual history via Instant Previews, he added.

“Tapping on an icon in the top right of the screen brings you into a visual preview of the pages for your search result, easy to scroll through with the swipe of a finger,” he said.  Fish also said a few extra features including a magnifying glass on the top right-hand corner to highlight the most relevant section of the page.

One can also recommend pages one likes with the new +1 button, right next to the magnifying glass, and help others find relevant sites more easily as well.

“We’ve also made it easier to find and use your favorite Google services like Google News, Calendar and more in the new Apps menu. Tap on an icon to quickly read an email in Gmail, or share a post on Google+ within the slide-in pane. When you slide the pane to the right, you’ll be right back to searching,” Fish said.

Review: Nook Tablet is Kindle Fire's worthy foe

Posted in : Reviews, Tablet PCs

(added few months ago!)

Review Nook Tablet is Kindle Fire's worthy foeThis product image provided by Barnes & Noble Inc., shows the new Nook Tablet. The Barnes & Noble's Nook Tablet is a worthy competitor to Amazon.com's Kindle Fire. It avoids some of the Fire's shortcomings, but has flaws of its own. (AP Photo/Barnes & Noble Inc.)

Listen, and I'll tell you the story of the bookstore chain that stormed into the hottest category in consumer electronics and conquered.  It's a nice underdog story, right? A bit like the tale of plucky rebels who attacked Lord Vader's Death Star.

But that was fiction. Barnes & Noble Inc.'s new Nook Tablet ($249) is a solid product, worthy of duking it out with Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire. Considering that the Nook comes from a desert planet where the only entertainment was shooting womp rats (Sorry, I mean "from a bookstore chain."), it's really impressive.

But the Nook doesn't quite muster enough force to blow up a Death Star. Barnes & Noble's earlier Nooks were dedicated book-reading devices, and the Tablet is at most a half-way step into the world of general-purpose tablet computing.

Like the new Kindle Fire, the Tablet has a 7-inch, touch-sensitive color screen, about half the size of the iPad's. It's the same screen as on the Nook Color, the e-reader Barnes & Noble launched a year ago. I thought it was the best e-reader yet when it launched.

The Tablet improves on the Nook Color mainly by beefing up the processor and the memory and extending the battery life to 11.5 hours of reading, or 9 hours of video.

The Tablet also has improved software, but the Color will be getting the same software through a downloadable update.

The Tablet is debuting with Netflix and Hulu applications. Coupled with the nice, sharp screen, that makes for a good device for that TV and movie fix --as long as you're connected to Wi-Fi. The apps actually highlight one of the shortcomings of the Tablet: there's no way (short of hacking the software) to use it for offline viewing of movies you buy or rent.

Barnes & Noble promises to provide access to some sort of movie store next year. Amazon, meanwhile, launched the Kindle Fire with access not just to Netflix and Hulu, but to its own store with downloadable video, plus free streaming content for Amazon Prime subscribers.

Barnes & Noble is also well behind when it comes to the selection of third-party applications: it has about 1,000 available today. That compares to just under 10,000 at Amazon, and 500,000 on the iPad.

However, the Nook has these features over the Fire:

-- Faster processor and more memory for software operations, which means faster Web browsing and magazine page-flipping.

-- Longer battery life.

-- Twice as much storage space: 16 gigabytes compared to eight. Don't get too excited about this, though. What Barnes & Noble has left out of its marketing material is that only 1 gigabyte is available for content that isn't bought from Barnes & Noble. Since books don't take up much space and Barnes & Noble doesn't sell movies, much of the 16 gigabytes is likely to be wasted.

-- A slot for memory cards. This is the cure for the lack of memory for non-Barnes & Noble content. You can add another 16 gigabytes of memory by buying a $20 card.

-- The ability to load books from third-party stores like Google Books. On the Kindle, you can only read books from Amazon.

-- Netflix streams are sharper. Barnes & Noble initially claimed they were in high definition, but that X-wing doesn't fly: the Tablet's screen isn't high-definition.

-- Children's books with built-in narration (some Kindle apps have this).

-- A microphone. This doesn't have a lot of uses at the moment, but it does allow you to record your own narration.

Apart from the ones mentioned above, the Kindle Fire has these features over the Nook:

-- A lower price: $199.

-- The Comixology app, the most popular one for comic books. On the Nook, you're pretty much limited to buying electronic comics from Barnes & Noble.

For the most part, the Nook Tablet justifies the higher price tag compared to the Kindle. Of course, anyone with money to spend should also be looking at the iPad 2, which starts at $499 and does all of what these smaller tablets do -- plus a whole lot more. That's one Death Star that won't be exploding in a hurry.

Flip MinoHD Digital Video Camera

Posted in : Digital Cameras

(added few months ago!)

Flip camcorders have taught us something in recent years – simplicity rules! If you’ve got some filming to do, you don’t want to waste your time setting up shots, you want to point, shoot and edit later – which Flip camcorders let you do with some added help from their built-in software. They are quite simply an amateur filmmaker’s dream – a dream that’s suddenly become a lot better, because they’ve gone HD!

Flip MinoHD Digital Video Camera

Flip’s new MinoHD comes with either 4GB of memory for an hour’s worth of filming or 8GB for an extended 2 hours. The battery can go for one and a half hours off a full charge and you can easily replenish the battery by plugging it into your computer via USB.

It also features a two-inch LCD screen and a built in speaker that allows you to look over and listen to the footage you’ve captured. As its name suggests it still has the great “flip” out USB feature which means you don’t have to worry about finding a cable or removing anything from the device to edit your movies.
It has TV Out capabilities too, so you can connect it up to your big screen at home and share your efforts with your friends and family.

The price at release for these excellent little video cams was an extremely reasonable £129.99 for the 4GB model and £149.99 for the 8GB model. Since then prices have dropped quite significantly and you could easily snag yourself a bargain, when buying yourself one of these today.

Ultrabook Launched By HP

Posted in : Tablet PCs

(added few months ago!)

New ultrabook, the HP Folio 13, launched Wednesday. The thin 13.3-inch laptop contains more business-related features and a longer battery life compared to other ultrabooks.

In addition to being light and thin, the HP Folio is also very durable, supported by a strong metal frame. Its 9 hours of battery life is the longest available among Ultrabooks to date. Another surprising feature found on the Folio is a backlit keyboard.

Even though it's not currently the thinnest or lightest ultrabook, the company hopes that the Folio will be popular among business users with options like a TPM embedded security chip for email and hard drive protection, according to HP’s press release on Wednesday.

The starting price is $900, offering a Core i5-2467M processor, 4GB of memory, 126GB solid state drive, and a wide range of connectivity ports, PC World reports. The consumer model will be available to purchase starting December 7.
