Product review: Samsung S2

August 16, 2008 |12:16 | Reviews  By : Team X

In the world of gadgetry, this will be remembered as the epoch of the iPod – even with honest tryers such as Samsung's S2 Digital Audio Player around. But don't conclude the inevitable just yet. The S2 has some neat little touches that Apple's world beater does not.

For starters, it's better looking. The S2 is round, pebble-shaped, just under two inches in diameter and finished in smooth piano gloss. Of the five colour options, we reviewed the black, which was very susceptible to fingerprints and greasy smudges. However, at this price range it is only natural that the finish will not quite be Steinway. Still, it looks better than the Shuffle – its direct competitor within the iPod line-up.

Samsung Launches Touch-Screen Cell Phone

Samsung's Anycall Haptic looks like a thinner version of Apple's iPhone, but adds a new dimension to the touch interface.

The phone, launched in South Korea on Tuesday, has a large touch-screen display that also provides haptic feedback, information transmitted via the sense of touch, when using certain functions on the device. It means, for example, that when the volume of the radio is changed, the phone simulates both the sound and feel of the "clicks" on an old-style volume knob on a real radio, said Samsung.

There are 22 kinds of vibration in total built into the phone.

The Anycall Haptic (model numbers SCH-W420 and SPH-W4200) phone has a 3.2-inch widescreen display, a 2-megapixel digital camera, full Internet browser, Bluetooth 2.0 and terrestrial digital TV reception.

Nokia demos bendable cell phone

February 26, 2008 |12:47 | CellPhones | For Her | For Him | Reviews | Spy  By : Team X

Nokia and the University of Cambridge are showing off a new stretchable and flexible mobile device of the future called Morph.

The new concept phone is part of an online display presented in conjunction with the "Design and the Elastic Mind" exhibition underway through May 12 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The device, which is made using nanotechnology, is intended to demonstrate how cell phones in the future could be stretched and bent into different shapes, allowing users to "morph" their devices into whatever shape they want. Think Stretch Armstrong for cell phones. Want to wear your cell phone as a bracelet? No problem, just bend it around your wrist.

Nokia says the concept device demonstrates handset features that nanotechnology might be capable of delivering, including flexible materials, transparent electronics, and self-cleaning surfaces.

"Nokia Research Center is looking at ways to reinvent the form and function of mobile devices," Bob Iannucci, chief technology officer for Nokia, said in a statement. "The Morph concept shows what might be possible."

Even though Morph is still in early development, Nokia believes that certain elements of the device could be used in high-end Nokia devices within the next seven years. And as the technology matures, nanotechnology could eventually be incorporated into Nokia's entire line of products to help lower manufacturing costs.

Biometric Identification Based Safe - Futuristic Design and Strong Security

February 12, 2008 |14:22 | Reviews  By : Team X

Some kinds of documents and things must be locked away from unauthorized access. For centuries, people use locks and safes to guard their important belongings. However, those bulky safes are so old fashioned nowadays! The keys can be stolen or lost, password - revealed or forgotten. Truly modern safes are based on personal identification that cannot be lost or replicated. One of these methods is fingerprint identification - one of the most commonly used biometric identification nowadays. Fingerprints are very hard or almost impossible to replicate, and there is no need to worry about losing key or forgetting password - while your fingers are with you, you will always be able to open that safe.

Gen next: TVs with Internet connectivity

High-definition televisions making their way to U.S. stores are getting bigger, brighter and better -- including Internet connectivity.

Many of the biggest TV makers at the recently ended Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas pointed to Internet connectivity above any other new feature on the sets that will be available this year, The Dallas Morning News reported Tuesday.

Panasonic and Samsung officials tout their respective sets' ability to import videos and images from the Internet.

Sharp televisions, meanwhile, will let viewers visit NBC's Web sites for all programming offered there. The company said it also would use Internet connectivity to allow its technicians to perform repairs remotely.

"A lot of problems that people encounter don't require any hardware fixes. They just require someone to play with the settings or possibly work on the software," said Sharp representative Robin Feldman said.

Right now, though, there's one big drawback: all of the new TVs work with only selected Internet partners, the Morning News said. None of them make it easy for users to transfer video from their computers to their televisions.

But such open technology on the horizon -- probably within a year or two, electronics executives said.
