Tech Review: Canon PowerShot S95 Digital Camera

September 4, 2010 |23:12 | Digital Cameras  By : Team X

With Canon's HS system, 10 megapixel sensor and DIGIC 4 image processor, the PowerShot S95 digital camera promises astounding photo quality, HD video recording and more. Kevin Pereira and Carrie Keagan review this $400 camera for its array of features. What You Need To Know This is one of the sleekest digital compact cameras we've seen. It feels really light in your hand and is barely over an inch thick. It easily slides in your pocket since the only thing that protrudes is the lens. It's easy to use as any other digital camera. If you're familiar with Canon cameras, you'll be able to use this one with no problem.

All the buttons are self explanatory and the rotational pad is nice. One thing they added is the control ring, which you can assign different functions to, like focus, exposure, zoom, white balance, etc. It's useful but might be a bit small to get your fingers around. This also features new image stabilization technology, HD video recording and a bunch of cool photo effects. All these features work pretty well for the most part. The hybrid image stabilization uses both an accelerometer and angular sensor to eliminate blur. HD video is a nice addition, especially because it looks really good.

Sony announces the NEX-3 and NEX-5 cameras

May 11, 2010 |15:36 | Digital Cameras  By : Team X

The Sony Alpha NEX-5, at 24.2mm thick, is described by Sony as being the 'world's smallest and lightest interchangeable lens digital camera'. The camera is mirrorless, similar to the micro-four-thirds system cameras from Panasonic and Olympus. With no internal mirror built in, the body of the camera can be smaller and lighter.

Both the NEX-3 and the NEX-5 have 14.2Mp Exmor APS HD CMOS sensors, which are more akin to sensors found on digital SLR than compact cameras, and should therefore reduce the effect of graininess in pictures - particularly when shooting.

In low light. Both cameras will launch in June alongside three compatible lenses from Sony. The SEL16F28 is a fixed 16mm pancake lens, while the SEL1855 is a more versatile zoom. The new cameras will be available to buy with one or both of these lenses.

October 13, 2009 |14:45 | Digital Cameras  By : Team X

Samsung ST550 dual-screen digital cameraWe like Samsung's innovative addition of a second screen to the ST550, but this digital camera could be improved.

Its battery life is poor, the menu system needs more information, and it could use some more manual controls. However, it can take some good photos and it performs adequately in dim lighting.

Samsung's ST550 is the first compact digital camera on the market to feature two LCD screens. It's squarely aimed.

Digital cameras - put yourself in the picture

September 29, 2009 |12:32 | Digital Cameras  By : Team X

Digital cameras - put yourself in the pictureFor a long time, cameras — especially compacts  have been rather dull. They looked similar and buyers expected them to have a standard set of buttons and work in similar ways.

The expectation was that almost any one you bought would be "good enough". All manufacturers seemed to care about was increasing the resolution (number of megapixels) of their next model.

Low Lighting? No Problem, Sony Says

August 12, 2009 |13:16 | Digital Cameras  By : Team X

Low Lighting No Problem Sony SaysSony claims to have solved a problem we all grapple with: getting good photos in low light without resorting to an ambience-killing flash. The company just announced two Cyber-shot point-and-shoot cameras with new low-light sensors that it says will deliver sharp, well-exposed images–bright lighting not necessary.

The two new Cyber-shots, $380 DSC-TX1 and $350 DSC-WX1, deliver better light sensitivity thanks to Sony’s Exmor R back-illuminated sensor, which debuted on the Cyber-shot DSC-HX1. Further boosting their low-light chops, the TX1 and WX1 both incorporate the hand-held twilight and anti-motion blur multi-shot modes that were also introduced in the bulkier DSC-HX1.
