April 11, 2009 |15:25 | Computers  By : Team X

When the RazorBook 400 CE first came out, it was priced at $299 and that was quite a steal. It launched just a little under a year ago but it’s already seriously underpowered and not exactly flying off the shelves, necessitating a price cut.

Asus has unveiled its latest 22in LCD screen and in doing so has prized the 'world's slimmest' crown from BenQ's sweaty grip.

The new Asus is just 45mm thin and isn't bad looking, though it's certainly no KURO either despite the grandiose sounding diamond-cut corners and glass surface and leather bedecked bezel.

The light-in-motion II dynamic lighting effects are of note however, working by shining base-mounted LEDs at the main screen to enhance ambience and dynamism.

Also featured is the ubiquitous picture optimisation technology and 'Aspect Control' support for a range of aspect ratios. Contrast ratio sits at 4000:1 using the proprietary Smart Contrast control and response time is a decent 2ms.

HD Ready, it sports HDMI connectivity and after we brought you earlier news of its Taiwan release, it's now available in Blighty for the wallet-tightening price of £270.

Via Technologies Unveils 64-bit Nano CPU

May 30, 2008 |18:18 | Apple | Computers | General  By : Team X

Via Technologies is taking aim at the larger microprocessor market.
Via Technologies unveiled the Nano, a new CPU designed for ultra small computers and an upgrade from its C7 microprocessor already powering low-powered computers, such as HP's Mini Note portable.

VIA Technologies announced Thursday its Nano processor family, based on the 64-bit Isaiah architecture.

Nano, the successor to VIA's C7 chips, is said to offer four times the performance whilst keeping within the same power envelope.

The architecture, developed by subsidiary Centaur Technology, uses Fujitsu's 65 nanometre technology to deliver "the first 64-bit, super scalar, speculative out-of-order processors in VIA's x86 platform portfolio". The new architecture provides 1MiB of L2 cache, clock speeds of up to 1.8GHz and a front-side bus starting at 800MHz.

VIA states that the 21x21mm chip will "revitalize traditional desktop and notebook PC markets, delivering truly optimized performance for the most demanding computing, entertainment and connectivity applications, including Blu-ray Disc, HD video playback and the latest PC games, such as Crysis."

When Via was asked how the Nano stacks up against Intel's Atom, "The Nano is definitely faster, I said that originally and I'm very sure of that now," said Glenn Henry, president of Centaur Technology.

The Nano chips now available to OEMs come in two SKUs; the Nano L-Series for the mainstream desktop or mobile PCs, and the U-Series for ultra-mobile devices.

Samsung To Unveil 256GB Solid State Drive

May 26, 2008 |17:18 | Apple | Computers  By : Team X

Computer chip manufacturer Samsung Electronics announced a solid state drive (SSD) that could render laptop hard disk drives obsolete.

The device, built with a 256GB capacity, reportedly is almost 2.5 times faster than today's hard drives.

Samsung stated that the SSD will provide users the technology that would equip notebooks with faster and larger storage.

The 2.5-inch long, 9.5 millimeter-thick SSD will have a 200mbps read capacity, and a write capacity of 160mbps.

The company will be putting out a limited number of the SSDs for sampling this coming September, with mass production and distribution to follow before the close of the year. It went on to predict that about 35 percent of available notebooks would be running with the SSD by the year 2012.

PC World reported that a smaller, 1.8-inch version of the device would most probably be available later this year.

"Keep an eye on Bollywood and TV's convergence"

The One Laptop per Child project is about to find out whether Microsoft Corp. a rival the nonprofit organization once derided is the solution to its problems in providing inexpensive computers to children in the developing world.

The laptop organization and Microsoft announced Thursday that the group's XO computers now can run Windows in addition to their homegrown interface, which is built on the Linux operating system.

Nicholas Negroponte, founder of the Cambridge, Mass., group, acknowledged that having Windows as an option could reassure education ministers who have hesitated to buy XOs with its interface, called Sugar. The organization aims to produce $100 laptops but is now selling them for $188.

Beginning with limited runs next month, XO buyers will have the option of laptops with or without Windows. Versions with Windows will cost $18 to $20 more; $3 of that is for Windows and the rest covers hardware adjustments.

Negroponte hopes to soon sell just one kind of machine with a "dual-boot" mode, meaning users would have Windows and Linux and choose which to run each time.
