Research commissioned by UK department store Debenhams shows that the average handbag weight has dropped dramatically from around 3.5kg in 2006/2007 to 1.5kg last year (2009) - this is a shrinkage of 57pc.
Furthermore the researchers assert that rather than modern technology adding to the 'kitchen sink' array of lipgloss, car keys, books, hairspray etc found in depths of the average handbag.
The shrinking size of laptops, mp3 players and powerful smartphones like the Blackberry and iPhone has meant that the busy female can cram more in a smaller bag.
"Two years ago, women were carrying around 7.3lbs - the equivalent of three and a half bags of sugar - everywhere they went," said Sue Tebbitts, handbag buyer at Debenhams. "Finally the burden placed upon working women is falling - and it's all thanks to technology."
